who we are

Our History

The idea of establishing a Finnish rest home for seniors in Sudbury began in the early 1980s, inspired by plans for a similar facility in Sault Ste. Marie. The project started informally when Oliver Korpela offered to donate land if the Finnish community built the rest home. In 1982, the Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society was officially formed, incorporated as a non-profit organization, and began fundraising and planning a three-phase seniors’ complex: Finlandia-Koti (self-care apartments), Palvelukoti (residential care), and Hoitokoti (extended care).

By 1983, land in Minnow Lake was rezoned and donated, and planning approvals were secured. With funding support from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, construction of Finlandia-Koti began in 1984 and the building officially opened in 1985, offering apartments, saunas, a gym, chapel, and community spaces. The facility was well received and fully occupied, encouraging the Society to proceed with Phase II.

In 1990, the Province of Ontario approved funding for Palvelukoti. After extensive fundraising and community support, construction was completed and the facility opened in 1992, providing residential care units and shared services. By its 10th anniversary, the Society had successfully developed a multi-facility seniors’ complex, with plans to complete Phase III for extended care in the future.
